Aston says One-77 prototype hits 220-mph mark

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Aston Martin released this photo of the One-77 supercar being tested in southern Europe. The prototype was clocked at 220 mph.

Aston Martin’s One-77 supercar looks fast–and it goes fast.

The British luxury-car maker says a prototype of the One-77 notched 220.007 mph during testing in southern Europe. The speed mark was set in dry and windy conditions.

The One-77 is powered by a 7.3-liter V12. The car’s body makes extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum, which keeps weight down.

Aston plans to start deliveries of the car next summer.

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

The car is a rocket, and I never tire of the flat-six’s awesome sounds. Personally, I’d prefer Porsche’s PDK transmission, but there is nothing wrong with this manual.

With two people and a little luggage, this car borders on practical and makes for an awesome long-distance cruiser. This latest 911 is quite a bit more refined than the outgoing model.

SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: There might be more sensible ways to spend $100,000, especially when it comes to transportation, but there might not be a better way to spend $100,000 on a sports car. Wes is right: This car is simply a joy to drive, from the moment you twist the key in that left-handed ignition, bang first gear, and go. Everything is taut, ready to response to driver inputs, without being overly twitchy or needy. The steering feel alone might be worth the price of admission–every little divot, paint line, crack and deviation in the road surface is telegraphed directly to your fingertips holding the steering wheel. In hard cornering, you can feel the suspension fighting for tire contact even as inside weight unloads and bumps try to unsettle the chassis. As a result, there’s never any doubt about exactly what the car is capable of at any given moment.

Add a perfect pitch level of power and the right gear ratios, uncommonly good brakes and styling inside and out that seems luxurious and timeless, and it’s hard to find any complaint about this Porsche.

EDITORIAL ASSISTANT JONATHAN WONG: No matter what variation of Carrera we’ve had come through here, I always think back to our black long-term Carrera S. Between the time it left and now, we’ve had base Carreras, the Turbo, all-wheel-drive models and ones with the new PDK transmission. None of them was the S model with a six-speed manual until now.

Why do I look back on that car so fondly? Well, because it was the perfect car with just the right amount of power in a traditional rear-wheel-drive and manual-transmission setup. It’s the ideal combination of hardware to draw a driver in and get him involved. The feedback provided by the 911 is something that few cars can match when it comes to higher-production vehicles. It’s only when you get into the smaller-volume makers such as the Lotus or kit-car vehicles such as the Nobles/Rossions of the world that you can find something that’s an equal to the Porsche, but then you’re talking about cars where average-sized adults struggle even to get into them.

The flat six-cylinder at wide-open throttle is a great driving soundtrack. Yank the steering wheel in any direction, and the car reacts instantly to make placing it in any desired spot a breeze. Everything is so well dialed in–pedal placement, shifter and instant throttle response–to make driving this car a real joy.

In corners, the grip is tremendous and requires you really to try to make the back end step if you want. This is a real driver’s car that still has enough functionality with a decent-sized trunk up front and a back seat that is there for emergency situations.

MOTORSPORTS EDITOR MAC MORRISON: Terrible color combination. How did red and tan become a classic mix? I can live with the red, though not as my first or third or fifth choice. But tan interior? Ugh, is this 1985?

Everyone knows I love these cars–still my favorite, in fact. This latest version with the direct-injection engine is yet the latest of 18 billion 911 evolutions Porsche has managed in the last 40-something years, and, as always, it’s impressive that the company keeps pulling more out of this car.

You now get 30 hp more, peaking 100 rpm sooner than before, plus 15 additional lb-ft of torque peaking 150 rpm later. And you feel the improvement. The 911 S is still not a devastatingly fast car, but it knocks on 60 mph’s door in just a tick more than four seconds–eesh, how crazy is it that cars have come so far that I don’t consider 0 to 60 in the low fours to be devastatingly fast?–and pulls stoutly in every gear. Speaking of which, this shifter is one of the finest in the world, even without the optional short-shift kit. And I’m always struck by the firmness of Porsche’s pedals. Some people might think that sounds like a strange thing to praise, but it really is quite something and makes it so easy to engage clutch, brakes and throttle with extreme precision. Add the widely lauded steering, and it is very, very difficult to think of a stock sports car that communicates to drivers the way this one does. And that is the 911’s real selling point. Don’t even mention niche cars such as the Lotus Elise, either, as that’s an entirely different type of experience in a far less practical package.

Though this car is far more refined than older cars (except perhaps the reviled 996), the Carrera is visceral enough in its every move and feedback that you never forget that you are driving a real weapon. That’s the kind of thing that I think is missing from, say, Audi’s R8. It’s a small thing in a way, a perception thing. But don’t discount how much of a role perception, rather than pure performance numbers, plays in your overall impression of a car–especially when driving on the street.

I’d also like to note that Porsche offers arguably the world’s best seats and driving position, at least for me. You wouldn’t think so to look at them, but once you sit in these things, you realize just how poor so many car seats are. After driving the Audi S5, which also has great seats and position, and then this Porsche, my back cringes at the thought of returning to anything less. It’s just another thing that contributes to the symbiosis of driver and car. And that remains the 911’s strongest selling point. As usual, you can’t help but ponder what the next generation will offer.

Best iPhone App To Date Rejected By Apple

iBoobs, undeniably the best iPhone application to date, has been denied the right to be sold in the iTunes store, because Apple claims the app is pornographic. Which, I think we can all agree, is utterly ridiculous. And by “utterly ridiculous” I mean I popped like 16 boners.

Thanks to Dylan, who agrees that Apple wouldn’t be where they are today if it weren’t for pornography. Remember your roots.

Michael Schumacher has a one-year deal with Mercedes

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

All clearances given, the BBC is reporting that Michael Schumacher is officially a driver for the Mercedes-Petronas F1 team. The deal is understood to be a one-year agreement, with Schumacher being paid £6.2 million ($9.82M U.S.) and having an open door at the end of the year to carry on if it all works out.

Mercedes is said to have its eye on Sebastian Vettel when his contract is up in 2012. Theoretically then, if Michael remains Michael behind the wheel, he could drive for the Three-Pointed Star and collect trophies, and perhaps Championships, until then. That’s an immense theoretical, however: Prost and Lauda took time off, came back, and won the whole show again; Jacques Villeneuve, well, not so much.

And as much as Ferrari respects the times it had with Schumacher, we have a feeling Luca di Montezemolo has already called Alonso to tell him, “You know what you have to do…” On the other hand, if Alonso doesn’t work out at Ferrari, and Michael does well and only has a one-year deal with Mercedes…

Techno Song Made With Actual Jeep Noises

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

http://www.geekologie.com/2009/12/techno_song_made_with_actual_j.php

This is a video of an old Jeep Cherokee being used to make a song by combining all the different sounds it can make (trying to start, locking/unlocking doors, door ajar alarm, etc). It is highly impressive/unbelievable.

The sounds in this video are ACTUAL sounds from the Jeep. Everyone began rehearsing their parts 2 weeks before we shot the video. It took us 7 hours of filming to get a solid take. Enjoy! The song starts off kind of slow but really picks up around 1:00, so go ahead and skip to there if you don’t have much time. And, if you really don’t, how about including me in the will?

Lexus LF-A Crystallised

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The Lexus LF-A Crystallised Wind is a car made entirely of acrylic glass. I know, I thought it was real crystallized wind too. LIARS! Anyway, I don’t recommend stuffing any dead bodies in the trunk. I do recommend wearing pants.

Hit the jump for another shot of the car with some lighting effect that makes it look like ice.

Justin got a little too drunk for his birthday

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Click HERE to see his video.
I talked to him last week about his birthday and him getting “SUPER DRUNK” and he said all he remembers is waking up in a detox jail cell. Long story short Justin aka JCon, got into a big fight with his girlfriend and I guess drank like there was no tomorrow for his 19th birthday party (ALL DAY LONG). Well someone let hem out of his house and somehow made it to the gas station. No hes not old enough to buy the beer but you know when your drunk enough you’ll do anything and you don’t care. I’m thinking he was going to walk out with the beer. “If he could” well after trying to get up off the floor for about 30 minutes the store owner was stocking the chefs and heard Justin hit his head  on some what looks like green beans and looked over the counter and found him looking like a DRUNK bobble headed mofo. Well he knew Justin wasn’t 21, “being the small town that he lives in” and kicked him out of the store. (Well tried to) Also no he wasn’t driving his car… He walked there because someone took his keys. “Thank god” But he did get a free ride to jail for the day. Justin’s girlfriend and family didn’t know what happen to him after the verbal fight with his girl. He was missing for a day or so. Well he called his dad (FROM JAIL), “a well known car collector of the town” and the local Police office didn’t press any charges due the the fact he was under 21 and the cops laughed them self’s to death with the video. We don’t know who to this day put the video all over the web but JCON and his dad wants to get some sort of money for this video.

Good news, JCon said, “I’m going to clean up” and he did. He shaved up and cut his hair off. He’s a new man. Sure looked old in the video… GOOD JOB Justin.

Now I just got this in my youtube account. Justin’s going to die when he finds out about this.

Justin your now famous!

trutv e mailed us.

TruTv e mailed me.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for getting back to me. We can offer $XXXX.XX
We don’t do paypal, we can do wire transfers or check, and it would need to be accompanied by a W-9 and a signed license agreement which can all be looked over first of course.
In order to pay Justin for this directly, I would need to acquire the tape from him. Closed circuit camera is not copywritable by law, therefore I can get it from the store and use it, and not go through Justin; however I’d like to get it from him as he’s the one in the video and it’s only fair.
The way licensing of these types of videos work is we pay the owner (if it is protected by copyright) or person giving us the video if it is not- but I’d like to
talk to Justin and get the tape through him, confirm this story is real, and then we can pay to use it.

_____________________________________

I was just looking on youtube one day came accost this video and was dumb founded that my friend was all over the internet.

I sent him a text saying would you take $XXXX.XX for the video?
Justin said, “Hell no, my moms going to sue that gas station for all it gots unless they relinquish the video of him to be sole owner of it. He would like to take YouTube to cort or send out a cease and desist to all online video web pages.”

I think that $XXXX.XX is chunk change to him, His family is very rich and could car less about $XXXX.XX

With in the next month all videos should be taken down with cease and desist letters sent out. His mom is the bast lawyer in the surrounding 5 states.

We know the cops have a copy and the store has a copy. We are trying to track down the person responsible for putting it up on break.com then YouTube.com  “My video is a copy of a copy”

Thanks for your time

Joe
