Lotus confirms specs and pricing

Greg Migliore, 10.5.2009

The latest speed demon from Lotus, the 2010 Exige S 240, will start at $65,690 when it goes on sale in the United States in this fall.

The S240 gets a restyled front end with a larger, more angular air intake flanked by two other vents. There also is a new splitter that wraps around the face of the car.

In the back, there’s a new composite rear wing based on the Exige GT3 road-car concept shown at the Geneva motor show in 2007.

Lotus also confirmed more specs of the S 240. It will draw power from a 1.8-liter Toyota-sourced four-cylinder motor that makes 240 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The chassis weighs just 150 pounds, and the whole car checks in at just 2,077 pounds.

The EPA figures are 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

The price does not include destination charges.

Lotus will reveal the Exige Scura at the Tokyo auto show this week, a special-edition speed demon that’s lighter, bolstered with performance refinements and wrapped in black exterior packaging. Scura translates as “dark” in Italian, and that is derived from the high-gloss phantom black triple stripes that run the length of the car, giving it a menacing yet sporty look. The rest of the exterior is coated in a “soft-feel” matte black finish. Lightweight carbon-fiber parts slim the Scura by about 22 pounds. Lotus’s launch and traction-control features are standard. That’s the outside, but lurking beneath is a supercharged 1.8-liter motor that makes 257 hp. The car can run to 60 mph in four seconds and can clock a top speed of a 152 mph.The Exige Scura will be limited to just 35 copies.
